Synopsis from Goodreads:
“I made the wrong choice.”
Lina is spending the summer in Tuscany, but she isn’t in the mood for Italy’s famous sunshine and fairy-tale landscape. She’s only there because it was her mother’s dying wish that she get to know her father. But what kind of father isn’t around for sixteen years? All Lina wants to do is get back home.
But then she is given a journal that her mom had kept when she lived in Italy. Suddenly Lina’s uncovering a magical world of secret romances, art, and hidden bakeries. A world that inspires Lina, along with the ever-so-charming Ren, to follow in her mother’s footsteps and unearth a secret that has been kept for far too long. It’s a secret that will change everything she knew about her mother, her father—and even herself.
People come to Italy for love and gelato, someone tells her, but sometimes they discover much more.
This is just a perfect summer read! It’s cute, it has romance, a bit of mystery, Italy and food. I enjoyed every moment of this book and it was just what I needed to relax and clear my head of work stress.
It’s a story of an American teenager whose mum dies, and in her last days, she instructs her that she must go to Italy to live with a man that her mother met and loved when she was studying in Florence. Reluctantly, Lina does just that. She comes to Italy, to live with Howard, who turns out is her father, something her mother somehow left untold. And Howard lives on a cemetery! He’s a superintendent on a WWII memorial site, where American soldiers were buried. So yeah, it all just seems a bit too much for Lina.
She later is given on of her mother’s diaries, one that she wrote when she was living and studying art in Florence. One that is describing how she fall in love in Italy. Lina also meets Ren, a half-Italian, half- American boy, who introduces her to her potential classmates if she stays in Italy. Ren also becomes her companion in solving the mystery of Lina’s mother’s diary.
Love & Gelato is pure fun. I highly recommend it to everyone who is looking for a perfect summer read, especially if you need a taste of foreign holidays when you stuck in your hometown. It’s fast paced and gives you some amazing flavours of Italy. I had to order an Italian pizza when I was reading this book 🙂
